The Perks of Being a Wallflower


The Perks of Being A Wallflower is an epistolary novel about a teenage boy, written by American novelist Stephen Chbosky. The book enjoyed the privilege of spending over a year in the New York Times Bestseller List. The crux of the story is the various letters written by an introverted teenager by the alias Charlie. Through his letters, Charlie expresses various life events of his to an anonymous stranger. The wallflower of the novel, in reference to the title, is its lead character Charlie. The book was published in 31 languages worldwide.
The novel, with its series of letters, represents the various facets of Charlie's life. Set in the early 1990's, the story takes the readers through the freshman year of Charlie in a high school in the suburb of Pittsburgh. 15-year-old Charlie begins to write letters to an anonymous person, about his life. He starts by writing about the start of his high school and his loss of Michael-Charlie's only friend who committed suicide the year before. Charlie is a wallflower and he happens to befriend a senior named Patrick. Through Patrick, Charlie gets to meet Sam-Patrick's step sister. Being an attractive girl, Charlie falls for Sam. But she has a boyfriend. Charlie goes on to discuss about his failure date, rupture of his relationship in Patrick's gang and the entailing sequences.
In the midst of his high school drama, Charlie frequently gets flashbacks about his aunt Helen. The book goes on to explore about Charlie's past and his revival. The Perks of Being A Wallflower is a melancholy collection of the memories of a troubled teenager.
